Novieri is now a Meta Tech Provider — and what that means for your WhatsApp

By · Co-founder, Technology & delivery

The short answer

Novieri is a Meta Tech Provider, approved by Meta for the WhatsApp Business Platform. In practice that means one thing for a client: the assistant we build for you runs on WhatsApp's official API, under your own Meta account, instead of on somebody's unofficial workaround. If you have been quoted for WhatsApp automation before, this is the difference that decides whether your number is still working in six months.

What the WhatsApp Business Platform actually is

There are three ways a business can send WhatsApp messages, and they are not equivalent.

  • The consumer app, on a phone. Fine for a handful of conversations a day. It does not connect to your booking system, it cannot answer at 11pm, and it does not survive the person who owns the phone leaving.
  • The WhatsApp Business app, still on a phone. Adds labels, quick replies and a catalogue. Still one device, still manual, still no integration with anything you run.
  • The WhatsApp Business Platform — Meta's official API. Multiple agents, software integration, automated replies, message templates, and a number that belongs to the business rather than to a handset.

The third one is the only one an AI assistant can genuinely run on. Access to it is what Meta grants, and it is what the Tech Provider approval covers.

Why unofficial routes are a real risk, not a technicality

Because the official platform has requirements, a market grew up around avoiding them. Providers automate the consumer app, or resell access through a shared number, or route messages through infrastructure Meta has not approved. It is cheaper to start and it works — until it does not.

Meta's terms prohibit automating the consumer apps. Numbers found doing it get restricted or banned, and the ban lands on the business's number, not on the vendor's. We have been called by companies whose WhatsApp line — the number printed on their menus, their vehicles and their signage — stopped working overnight, with no appeal and no export of the conversation history.

The uncomfortable part is that a business usually cannot tell which kind of provider it hired. The demo looks identical. The difference only shows up on the day something goes wrong.

What being an approved Tech Provider changes for you

  • The number is yours. It sits in your own Meta Business account. If you ever stop working with us, the number, the account and the history stay with you. There is nothing to migrate and nobody to ask.
  • You pay Meta directly for conversations, with your own payment method, at Meta's published rates. We are not reselling messages to you at a markup, and there is no per-message margin in our pricing.
  • Templates go through Meta's approval. Any message that starts a conversation outside the 24-hour service window has to be approved by Meta first. That is a constraint, and it is also the thing that keeps the channel from turning into spam.
  • The rules are legible. Meta's Commerce Policies prohibit selling certain categories over WhatsApp — alcohol, tobacco, medicines, weapons, supplements. We configure the assistant not to take orders for them, even when they appear on your menu.

What it does not mean

Being a Tech Provider is an approval to build on Meta's platform. It is not an endorsement of our work by Meta, it does not make us a Meta employee or reseller, and it does not make your account immune to Meta's own decisions. Meta sets messaging limits, changes fees and reviews templates on its own schedule, and it can suspend accounts. What the approval changes is that you are inside the system where those rules are published and appealable, rather than outside it hoping not to be noticed.

The approval currently covers the WhatsApp Business Platform. We have started the verification process for Instagram; when that is granted we will say so, and not before.

How to check a provider before you sign

Four questions, and the answers are quick.

  • Whose Meta Business account will the number live in? If the answer is not "yours", you are renting your own phone number.
  • Do I pay Meta directly for conversations, or do I pay you? Paying the vendor is not automatically wrong, but it means there is a margin you cannot see and a bill you cannot verify.
  • Is this the official Business Platform or an automation of the app? Ask them to say it plainly, in writing.
  • What happens to the number and the history if we stop working together? A provider who has to think about this is telling you the answer.

Where this leaves us

The approval does not make the assistant better at conversation — that is our work, and it is judged separately. What it settles is the boring, load-bearing question underneath: whether the channel you are putting at the centre of your customer service is built on something that will still be there next year.
